There are 4 traditional diet & lifestyle factors that affect health. I call them “traditional” because they have been present since the beginning of time and continue today to be just as important as they were back then: diet, hydration, sleep, and physical activity.

Traditional Factors Affecting Health

Up until about 100 years ago, there were no fast-food restaurants or even grocery stores. People lived off what the land provided and ate what food was available. There were no sports drinks, pop, or fruit juice around – people drank water when they were thirsty. There was no artificial light, Netflix, or video games to draw people’s attention away from lying down to sleep. And movement was part of daily life and survival. There was no need to set aside 30 minutes in their day to run on a treadmill or do some strength training. People lived largely in accordance with the cycles of nature, and the availability of food was determined by the seasons.

Fast forward to today; many people no longer live in accordance with the cycles of nature, and a wide variety of food is available any time of day and any time of year. It’s great to be living in a time of abundance, choice, and convenience. Without consciously adopting healthy habits, though, the conveniences of modern living come at a cost.
