What is being termed long COVID / long-haul COVID / post-COVID condition or syndrome is considered to be when the symptoms of COVID-19 persist in a person for longer than 12 weeks after they become infected.

Many different lingering symptoms are reported by those dealing with long covid, including:

  • cognitive problems (thinking and memory)
  • general fatigue
  • fatigue after exertion
  • chest pain
  • heart palpitations
  • respiratory issues
  • shortness of breath
  • chronic cough
  • dizziness
  • gastrointestinal symptoms
  • changes in sexual desire or capacity
  • loss of or change in sense of smell or taste

Recovering from an illness, any illness, takes time. When the length of time extends beyond what can reasonably be expected, the body, despite its best efforts using the resources available, is clearly having difficulty overcoming the infection.

The following factors influence how long it takes someone to recover from an infection:

  • During recovery from the infection:
    • diet & lifestyle – how much sleep, nutrition, water, rest, and time doing nothing they gave themselves
    • emotional states – stress, anxiety, worry, fear (for example, fear they won’t ever feel normal, feel like themselves again, or be able to enjoy life again)
    • nervous system – strongly influenced by emotional states
    • immune system – strongly influenced by diet, emotional states, sleep, and nervous system functioning

For someone who is struggling to overcome a viral infection, there is much that can be done to right the ship and get them on a path of recovery. Very often, there is more than one factor influencing a person’s ability to recover from an infection. This is when wholistic health treatment really shines.
